To perform an oil change, first warm up the engine, then place the bike on the center stand. Remove the oil filler cap, drain plug, and oil filter. Allow the oil to completely drain. Install a new oil filter and replace the drain plug. Refill with the recommended oil grade, then check the oil level after running the engine briefly.
The recommended tire pressure is 32 psi (2.2 bar) for the front tire and 36 psi (2.5 bar) for the rear tire when riding solo. Adjust the pressure according to load and riding conditions.
Check the battery charge and connections, ensuring they are clean and tight. Inspect the starter motor and relay. If the engine cranks but doesn't start, verify the fuel supply and check the spark plugs for fouling or wear.
To adjust the chain tension, place the bike on the center stand. Loosen the rear axle nut, then adjust the chain tensioner bolts evenly on both sides of the swingarm until the chain has about 35-45 mm of slack. Retighten the axle nut and check alignment.
The air filter should be inspected every 6,000 miles (10,000 km) and replaced if it's dirty or damaged. Under dusty or extreme conditions, more frequent inspections and replacements might be necessary.
Regular maintenance includes oil and filter changes, checking and adjusting the chain, inspecting brake pads and fluid, checking tire pressure and wear, and inspecting the suspension and electrical systems. Refer to the owner's manual for specific intervals.
To reset the service light, you typically need to use a diagnostic tool such as a GS-911 or visit a BMW dealer. The tool connects to the motorcycle's diagnostic port to reset the service interval.
If the ABS warning light stays on, check the ABS sensors and connections at each wheel. Ensure the wheel speed sensors are clean and undamaged. If the issue persists, a diagnostic tool may be needed to read error codes and diagnose further.
Use a high-quality ethylene glycol-based coolant that is specifically formulated for aluminum engines. Ensure it is mixed with distilled water at a 50/50 ratio, unless the coolant is pre-mixed.
Improve fuel efficiency by maintaining proper tire pressure, using high-quality fuel, performing regular maintenance, and avoiding aggressive acceleration and braking. Keeping the chain well-lubricated and properly tensioned also helps.
