To adjust the chain tension on your Yamaha TW200, place the motorcycle on a stand, loosen the rear axle nut, and adjust the chain adjusters on both sides of the swingarm until the chain has about 1-1.5 inches of slack. Ensure the rear wheel is aligned, then tighten the axle nut and re-check the tension.
The recommended oil type for the Yamaha TW200 is SAE 10W-40, API SE, SF, SG type or higher. The oil capacity is approximately 1.3 liters (1.37 US qt) when changing the filter.
For starting issues, check the battery charge and connections, ensure the kill switch is in the 'run' position, verify that the fuel petcock is on, and check the spark plug condition and gap. If these are all in order, inspect the carburetor for clogs or require adjustments.
To clean the carburetor, first, remove it from the motorcycle. Disassemble the carburetor, taking care not to lose any small parts. Use carburetor cleaner to spray all jets, passages, and parts. Reassemble and reinstall the carburetor, ensuring all connections are secure.
To replace the air filter, remove the seat and side cover to access the airbox. Open the airbox cover and remove the old air filter. Insert the new air filter, ensuring it's properly seated, then reattach the airbox cover, side cover, and seat.
For the Yamaha TW200, the recommended tire pressure is 18 psi for the front tire and 22 psi for the rear tire. Always check the tire pressure when the tires are cold.
Regular maintenance should be performed every 4,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. This includes an oil change, air filter inspection, chain adjustment, and checking critical nuts and bolts for tightness.
If the headlight isn't working, first check the bulb to see if it needs replacing. If the bulb is fine, inspect the headlight fuse and replace it if blown. Check the wiring connections for any loose or damaged wires.
For better off-road performance, adjust the rear shock preload to a higher setting to increase stiffness. Ensure the front forks are properly serviced and consider adjusting the fork oil weight or level for improved damping characteristics.
Common signs include difficulty starting the engine, misfiring, reduced fuel efficiency, and a visible buildup of carbon deposits on the spark plug electrode. It's advisable to inspect and replace the spark plug every 6,000 miles.
