Basic maintenance includes regularly checking and changing the engine oil, inspecting the fuel system for leaks, cleaning the fuel filter, checking the spark plugs, and inspecting the propeller for damage. Regular lubrication of moving parts is also recommended.
The recommended oil type for the Yamaha F25SMHA is Yamalube 4M 10W-30 or 20W-40, depending on the ambient temperature in which the motor will be used.
If you're experiencing starting issues, check the battery for a full charge, ensure the fuel tank is filled and the fuel valve is open, inspect the spark plugs for wear, and verify that the emergency stop switch is not engaged.
If overheating occurs, check for blockages in the water intake, ensure the water pump impeller is functioning correctly, and verify that the cooling system is not clogged. Replacing the impeller may be necessary if it's damaged.
It's recommended to inspect and, if necessary, replace the spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at least once per boating season.
To winterize your motor, stabilize the fuel, flush the engine with fresh water, fog the cylinders with fogging oil, change the engine oil and gear oil, and store the motor in a dry, protected environment.
To adjust the idle speed, locate the idle adjustment screw on the carburetor. Turn the screw clockwise to increase idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease it. Refer to the owner's manual for the recommended idle RPM.
Poor acceleration can be caused by a dirty fuel filter, fouled spark plugs, or propeller damage. Check these components, clean or replace them as necessary, and ensure the throttle linkage is properly adjusted.
To change the gear oil, remove the drain plug and the vent plug from the lower unit, allow the old oil to drain completely, and then refill with new gear oil through the vent hole until it starts to overflow. Replace the plugs securely.
The break-in procedure involves running the motor at varying speeds for the first 10 hours. For the first hour, operate at no more than half throttle. For the next hour, alternate between half and three-quarter throttle. During the remaining 8 hours, avoid full throttle and vary the engine speed.
