To start the Yamaha 9.9FMHS, ensure the engine is in neutral, attach the safety lanyard, open the fuel valve, set the choke if the engine is cold, and then pull the start cord firmly.
The Yamaha 9.9FMHS should have regular maintenance including checking the oil level and changing it every 100 hours, inspecting the propeller, and flushing the cooling system after every use in saltwater.
If the Yamaha 9.9FMHS won't start, check the fuel level, inspect the spark plug for fouling, ensure the kill switch is in the run position, and verify the fuel line is properly connected.
To troubleshoot overheating, check if the water intake is blocked, verify the impeller is functioning correctly, and ensure the water pump is in good condition.
Use unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 87 (R+M)/2. Avoid using fuel with more than 10% ethanol to prevent engine damage.
To winterize, drain the fuel system or add a fuel stabilizer, change the engine oil, fog the cylinders with oil, and store the motor in a vertical position.
Check the spark plugs for wear, clean or replace the fuel filter, and inspect the carburetor for debris or clogging.
Replace the impeller every 2-3 years or sooner if you notice reduced water flow from the cooling system.
Attach a hose to the flushing port, turn on the water supply, and run the engine at idle for 10 minutes to flush out salt and debris.
To adjust the idle speed, locate the idle adjustment screw on the carburetor and turn it clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease the idle speed.
