Regular maintenance includes checking and replacing the engine oil, inspecting the fuel lines and filters, checking the spark plugs, and ensuring the propeller is free of damage. Also, it's important to flush the cooling system with fresh water after each use in saltwater.
The recommended spark plug for the Yamaha 40TLRD is NGK BR8HS-10. Always check your owner's manual for confirmation and proper gap settings.
The engine oil should be changed every 100 hours of operation or at least once per season, whichever comes first.
If the outboard won't start, check the fuel level, battery condition, and ensure that the kill switch is in the correct position. Also, inspect the spark plugs and fuel line for any blockages or damage.
Start by checking the water intake for blockages and ensure the water pump is functioning properly. Inspect the thermostat and replace it if necessary. Flushing the cooling system can also help resolve overheating issues.
Yamaha recommends using fuels with no more than 10% ethanol. Higher ethanol content can cause damage to the fuel system. It's best to use ethanol-free gasoline when possible.
To winterize, start by flushing the engine with fresh water, add fuel stabilizer, and change the engine oil. Remove and inspect the spark plugs, fog the cylinders, and store the motor in an upright position.
The optimal propeller size can vary based on boat size, weight, and typical load. Consult the Yamaha propeller guide or your dealer for recommendations specific to your setup.
Remove the lower unit, then take off the water pump housing. Carefully remove the old impeller and replace it with a new one, ensuring the fins are oriented correctly. Reassemble the unit and test the water flow.
Excessive vibration can be caused by a damaged propeller, misaligned engine mounts, or debris caught in the propeller. Inspect and clean the propeller, and check the alignment of the engine mounts.
