To start the Toro Whirlwind 18-inch 21017 mower, ensure the fuel valve is open, the throttle is set to 'fast', and the ignition switch is on. Then, pull the starter rope firmly until the engine starts.
Use SAE 30 oil for optimal performance in temperatures above 40°F (4°C). For colder climates, 10W-30 oil can be used. Check the owner's manual for specific recommendations.
Sharpen the mower blade after every 20-25 hours of use or at the beginning of each mowing season to ensure a clean cut and prevent lawn damage.
If the mower won't start, check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is clean and properly connected, and verify the air filter is not clogged. Also, make sure the fuel is fresh.
To adjust the cutting height, locate the height adjustment levers near each wheel. Move the levers to the desired position for the chosen cutting height. Ensure all wheels are set to the same height for an even cut.
Regular maintenance includes checking and changing the oil, cleaning or replacing the air filter, inspecting and replacing the spark plug if necessary, and sharpening the blade. Always follow the maintenance schedule in the user manual.
After use, disconnect the spark plug wire, and use a brush or blower to remove grass clippings from the deck and blades. Avoid using water on the engine area to prevent damage.
It is not recommended to use the mower on wet grass as it can cause clumping, uneven cuts, and potential damage to the mower. Wait until the grass is dry for best results.
Excessive vibration can be caused by a damaged or unbalanced blade. Inspect the blade for damage and ensure it is properly balanced and securely attached. Replace if necessary.
For off-season storage, clean the mower thoroughly, drain the fuel tank, change the oil, and remove the spark plug. Store in a dry, protected area to prevent rust and damage.
