To change the oil, first run the engine for a few minutes to warm it up, then turn it off. Place an oil pan under the drain plug and remove the plug to drain the oil. Replace the plug and fill the engine with new oil as per the specifications in your owner's manual.
Use SAE 30 oil for temperatures above 32°F (0°C) and SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 for temperatures below 32°F. Always refer to your mower's manual for specific recommendations.
To sharpen the blades, first disconnect the spark plug. Remove the blade from the mower deck. Use a grinder or a file to sharpen the blade, maintaining the original angle. Balance the blade before reinstalling it to prevent vibration.
Ensure the fuel tank is filled with fresh gasoline, check the spark plug for wear or damage, and inspect the air filter for clogs. If the mower still doesn't start, the battery or ignition system might need attention.
The air filter should be checked before each mowing season and replaced at least once a year or more frequently if operating in dusty conditions.
Check if the tire pressures are equal and adjust if necessary. Ensure the mower deck is level and inspect the blades for sharpness and damage. Adjust the deck leveling as needed.
Adjust the cutting height by moving the wheel height adjustment lever to the desired position. Ensure all wheels are set to the same height for an even cut.
Excessive vibration can be caused by an unbalanced blade, loose parts, or debris lodged in the mower deck. Check the blade balance, tighten any loose bolts, and clear any debris from the deck.
At the start of each season, change the oil, replace the spark plug, clean or replace the air filter, sharpen and balance the blades, and inspect the mower for any loose hardware or worn parts.
Regular maintenance such as keeping the air filter clean, using the correct grade of oil, ensuring the blades are sharp, and maintaining proper tire pressure can help improve fuel efficiency.
