To start the Toro Recycler 22-inch 20040 mower, ensure that the spark plug is connected, fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline, set the throttle lever to the 'Fast' position, pull the safety bar towards the handle, and then pull the starter rope briskly.
Use SAE 30 oil for temperatures above 32°F (0°C) and SAE 5W-30 oil for temperatures below 32°F (0°C). Make sure to check the oil level regularly and change it after the first 5 hours of use, then annually or every 50 hours.
If the mower won't start, check the fuel level and quality, ensure the spark plug is not dirty or damaged, inspect the air filter for clogs, and confirm that the safety bar is properly engaged. Also, verify that the mower is on a flat surface.
To replace the blade, disconnect the spark plug, tip the mower onto its side with the air filter facing up, use a wrench to remove the blade bolt, replace the old blade with a new one, and securely tighten the bolt. Ensure the blade is balanced before use.
To clean the cutting deck, make sure the engine is off and the spark plug is disconnected. Use a garden hose to rinse off grass clippings and debris. For a thorough clean, gently scrape off stuck grass with a plastic scraper. Always dry the deck to prevent rust.
Sharpen the mower blade at least once per mowing season or after every 25 hours of use. Dull blades can tear grass rather than cut it cleanly, which can lead to lawn disease.
Uncut strips of grass can be caused by a dull blade, incorrect mowing height, or speed. Ensure the blade is sharp, adjust the mower to the correct height for your lawn, and avoid mowing too quickly.
To adjust the cutting height, locate the height adjustment levers on each wheel. Move the levers to the desired position, ensuring all wheels are set to the same height for an even cut.
At the end of the mowing season, drain the fuel system, change the oil, clean or replace the air filter, sharpen the blade, and clean the mower thoroughly. Store the mower in a dry, sheltered location.
To improve mulching performance, mow when the grass is dry, keep the blade sharp, and adjust the mowing height to avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length. Regularly clean the underside of the deck to prevent buildup.
