Ensure the mower is on a flat surface. Check the fuel level, and oil, and ensure the spark plug is connected. Pull the starter handle firmly to start the engine.
Check that there is fuel in the tank and that the fuel valve is open. Inspect the spark plug for any signs of wear or damage and replace it if necessary. Ensure the air filter is clean.
Change the oil after the first 5 hours of use, then every 25 hours of mowing or at least once a season, whichever comes first.
Perform a general inspection before each use, including checking the oil level, air filter, and blade condition. Follow the manual for a detailed maintenance schedule.
Locate the height adjustment levers on each wheel. Adjust all four levers to the desired height setting for an even cut.
Check the blade for sharpness and damage. Ensure that the wheels are set to the same height and that the mower deck is clean and free of debris.
Turn off the mower and disconnect the spark plug. Use a brush or cloth to clean debris from the deck, and use a hose to wash the underside if necessary.
Disconnect the spark plug and remove the blade. Use a file or bench grinder to sharpen the blade evenly, ensuring to balance it before reinstallation.
Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Avoid using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol.
Drain the fuel or add a fuel stabilizer. Clean the mower thoroughly, change the oil, and store it in a dry, sheltered location. Disconnect the spark plug for safety.
