To start the Toro 48-inch 78449 Mower, ensure the fuel valve is open, engage the parking brake, and set the throttle to the choke position if the engine is cold. Turn the ignition key to the start position and release it once the engine starts.
If the mower does not start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel valve is open. Verify that the battery is charged and connections are secure. Check the spark plug for wear or damage and replace if necessary.
Change the oil every 50 hours of operation or at least once per season. Use SAE 30 or 10W-30 oil for optimal performance.
To adjust the cutting height, locate the deck lift lever on the mower and move it to your desired position. Refer to the height guide, usually marked on the mower, to select the correct height setting.
Regular maintenance includes checking and replacing the air filter, sharpening the blades, checking tire pressure, lubricating moving parts, and inspecting belts for wear. Perform these tasks every 25 hours of operation or more frequently in dusty conditions.
For uneven cutting, check that the tire pressure is even on all sides. Ensure the blades are sharp and properly installed. Verify that the deck is level and adjust if necessary.
If the mower does not move, check the drive belt for damage or slippage. Ensure that the transmission is engaged and the parking brake is released. Check hydrostatic fluid levels and refill if needed.
To replace the blades, first disconnect the spark plug to prevent accidental starting. Use a wrench to remove the blade bolts, replace the blades with new ones, and securely tighten the bolts. Reconnect the spark plug when done.
For off-season storage, clean the mower thoroughly, remove any grass clippings, and perform all necessary maintenance. Drain the fuel system or add a fuel stabilizer. Store in a dry, covered area to protect from the elements.
To clean the mower deck, first ensure the engine is off and the spark plug is disconnected. Use a garden hose to wash away grass clippings and debris. For stubborn buildup, use a scraper or wire brush. Dry thoroughly before reconnecting the spark plug.
