Toro 38988 Operator's Manual

To start the Toro 38988 mower, ensure that the fuel valve is open, the throttle is set to 'Start', and the safety key is inserted. Then, pull the starter handle smoothly to start the engine.
If the mower won't start, check the fuel level, ensure the spark plug is connected, and verify that the air filter is clean. Additionally, make sure the safety key is properly inserted and the battery is charged if it's an electric start model.
Change the oil after the first 5 hours of use for a new engine, and then every 25 hours of operation or at the start of each mowing season. Use SAE 30 or 10W-30 oil for best performance.
To clean the mower deck, ensure the mower is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected. Use a garden hose to spray off grass clippings and debris. For thorough cleaning, scrape off any stubborn build-up with a plastic scraper.
Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Avoid using gasoline with more than 10% ethanol as it can damage the engine.
To adjust the cutting height, use the height adjustment levers located near each wheel. Move the levers to the desired position corresponding to the cutting height you prefer.
Excessive vibration may indicate a damaged blade or loose components. Check the blade for damage or imbalance, and ensure all nuts and bolts are tightened properly.
To replace the air filter, first disconnect the spark plug wire. Open the air filter cover, remove the old filter, and insert a new one. Secure the cover back in place before reconnecting the spark plug wire.
Sharpen the mower blade at least once per mowing season or every 25 hours of use to maintain optimal cutting performance. Always balance the blade after sharpening.
To winterize the mower, clean the mower deck, change the oil, and remove any fuel from the tank. Store the mower in a dry place, and disconnect the battery if applicable. Cover the mower to protect it from dust and debris.
