To start the Toro 17-inch 51957 Trimmer, ensure the trimmer is on a flat surface. Press the primer bulb fully and release it slowly 5 times. Set the choke lever to the "Choke" position, then pull the starter handle sharply until the engine starts. Move the choke lever to the "Run" position once it is running smoothly.
Use a clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Mix it with Toro 2-cycle engine oil in a 50:1 ratio for optimal performance.
To replace the trimmer line, turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug. Remove the spool by pressing tabs on the side. Insert a new line into the hole in the center, winding it evenly onto the spool. Reattach the spool and secure it in place.
If the trimmer won't start, check the fuel levels and ensure it has been mixed correctly. Inspect the spark plug for wear or damage, and clean or replace it if necessary. Verify the air filter is clean and replace it if clogged.
Clean the air filter after every 5 hours of use. Remove the air filter cover, take out the filter, and wash it with warm, soapy water. Rinse, let it dry completely, then apply a light coat of oil before reinstalling.
Regular maintenance includes checking and cleaning the air filter, inspecting the spark plug, checking fuel lines for cracks, and cleaning the trimmer head. It's also essential to lubricate moving parts and check for loose bolts or screws.
To adjust the idle speed, locate the idle speed screw on the carburetor. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease it. Adjust until the engine idles smoothly without stalling.
To prevent frequent line breakage, ensure you're using the correct line diameter recommended by Toro. Avoid striking the line against hard surfaces like concrete or rocks, and keep the speed moderate when trimming thick weeds.
Always wear protective eyewear, gloves, and sturdy footwear. Ensure the area is clear of bystanders, especially children and pets. Use the trimmer only in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhaling fumes.
For off-season storage, empty the fuel tank and run the engine until it stops. Clean the trimmer thoroughly, remove debris, and store it in a dry, cool place. It's advisable to remove the spark plug and add a few drops of oil into the cylinder to prevent corrosion.
