To adjust the Shimano Tiagra BR-RS405-F brakes, first ensure that the wheel is correctly seated in the dropout. Check that the brake rotor is true and free of warps. Use the barrel adjuster at the brake lever to fine-tune cable tension. For further adjustments, use the 2mm hex key to adjust the brake pads so they are evenly spaced from the rotor.
A common cause of squeaking brakes is contamination on the rotor or pads. Clean the rotor with isopropyl alcohol and inspect the brake pads for any debris or glazing. If necessary, lightly sand the surface of the brake pads to remove any contaminants.
To reduce brake lever travel, ensure that the hydraulic system is properly bled of any air bubbles. Check the fluid level and top it off if needed. If the issue persists, you may need to adjust the brake pads closer to the rotor using the pad adjustment screws.
It’s recommended to bleed Shimano Tiagra BR-RS405-F hydraulic brakes once a year or whenever you notice a decrease in brake performance, such as spongy lever feel or excessive lever travel.
Shimano Tiagra BR-RS405-F brakes use Shimano Mineral Oil. Do not use automotive brake fluids like DOT fluid, as they can damage the brake system.
First, ensure that the wheel is properly aligned in the frame. Check the rotor for any bends or warps. If the rotor is true, adjust the brake caliper position using the mounting bolts to ensure the rotor is centered between the pads.
Signs that brake pads need replacing include a noticeable decrease in braking performance, noise during braking, and brake pads that are worn down to less than 1mm thickness.
To replace the brake pads, remove the wheel and use a flathead screwdriver to carefully push back the pistons. Remove the retaining pin and slide out the old pads. Insert the new pads, ensuring they are correctly aligned, and reinsert the retaining pin.
To ensure proper alignment, loosen the caliper mounting bolts slightly, squeeze the brake lever to center the caliper on the rotor, and then retighten the bolts while holding the lever. This helps center the caliper and pads on the rotor.
Brake fade can occur due to overheating. Ensure that the rotor and pads are clean and not contaminated. Consider upgrading to a larger rotor for better heat dissipation, and check if the brakes need to be bled to remove any air bubbles in the system.
