To adjust the reach, locate the small adjustment screw on the inside of the brake lever. Use a 2mm hex key to turn the screw clockwise to decrease reach or counterclockwise to increase reach.
If the brake lever feels spongy, it may require bleeding. Follow the Shimano bleed kit instructions to remove any air bubbles from the hydraulic system.
Regularly inspect the brake pads for wear and replace them if they are below the recommended thickness. Ensure that the hydraulic fluid is at the proper level and free of contaminants.
Periodically clean the brake lever with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Lubricate the pivot points with a suitable lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
To replace the brake pads, remove the wheel, then use a 3mm Allen key to remove the pad retention bolt. Slide out the old pads and insert the new ones, ensuring they are properly aligned. Secure the pads with the retention bolt.
If the brake lever is not returning, it could be due to a lack of lubrication or a misalignment. Check the lever pivot points for obstructions and apply lubricant if necessary. Ensure the brake cable or hydraulic line is not kinked.
To test the brake lever, squeeze it firmly and ensure it engages the brake caliper without excessive travel or noise. Release the lever to check for smooth return. Repeat this process multiple times.
Shimano recommends using their proprietary mineral oil for the 105 BR-R7170 brake lever. Avoid using automotive or other types of hydraulic fluid as they may damage the system.
Loosen the caliper mounting bolts slightly, then squeeze the brake lever to center the caliper over the rotor. While holding the lever, tighten the mounting bolts to secure the caliper in the correct position.
If the brake lever is noisy, inspect for dirt or debris in the lever assembly and clean it if necessary. Ensure all bolts and screws are tightened to the recommended torque to prevent rattling.
