To start the John Deere 21C Trimmer, first ensure the fuel tank is filled with the correct fuel mixture. Set the choke to the closed position and press the primer bulb several times. Switch the ignition to the 'On' position, then pull the starter rope firmly until the engine fires. Once it starts, move the choke to the open position.
Use a 50:1 ratio of unleaded gasoline to 2-cycle engine oil. Ensure the gasoline has an octane rating of 89 or higher and is ethanol-free to prevent engine damage.
To replace the trimmer line, first turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug. Remove the trimmer head cover and take out any old line. Cut a new piece of line approximately 20 feet long, insert it into the spool, and wind it evenly. Replace the cover and ensure it is securely fastened.
If the trimmer won't start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel is fresh. Inspect the spark plug for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Ensure the air filter is clean and not clogged. Additionally, examine the ignition switch and starter rope for any issues.
Regular maintenance should be done after every 25 hours of use or at the start of each mowing season. This includes checking and cleaning the air filter, inspecting the spark plug, and ensuring all screws and bolts are tight.
To clean the air filter, remove the cover and take out the filter. Wash it in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Let it dry completely before reinstalling. If the filter is damaged or extremely dirty, replace it with a new one.
To adjust the idle speed, locate the idle adjustment screw on the carburetor. Turn it clockwise to increase the idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease it. Adjust until the engine runs smoothly without the head rotating at idle.
Overheating could be caused by a clogged air filter, incorrect fuel mixture, or restricted airflow. Ensure the air vents are clear and the cooling fins are clean. Use the proper fuel mixture and perform regular maintenance to prevent overheating.
Before storing the trimmer, drain all fuel and run the engine until it stops. Clean the exterior and inspect for any damage. Store the trimmer in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight. Consider removing the spark plug and adding a few drops of oil into the cylinder to prevent corrosion.
Signs that the spark plug needs replacing include difficulty starting the engine, poor performance, increased fuel consumption, and a fouled or damaged electrode. Replace the spark plug if it shows any of these symptoms.
