Ensure the mower is on a flat surface. Press the brake pedal, set the parking brake, and move the gear shift lever to neutral. Engage the choke and turn the ignition key to start the engine. Once started, gradually disengage the choke.
Use SAE 30 motor oil for temperatures above 32°F and SAE 5W-30 for temperatures below 32°F. Always check the oil level before each use.
Locate the cutting height adjustment lever on the side of the mower deck. Move the lever to the desired position, ensuring both sides are set equally for an even cut.
Check the blade engagement lever or switch to ensure it is in the 'on' position. Inspect the mower deck for obstructions and ensure the drive belt is properly aligned and tensioned.
Replace the air filter every 100 hours of operation or annually, whichever comes first. Check the filter more frequently in dusty conditions.
Excessive vibration may be caused by unbalanced or damaged blades. Check the blades for damage and balance them if necessary. Also, inspect mounting hardware for tightness.
Ensure the fuel tank has fresh gasoline, check the spark plug for wear or damage, and inspect the air filter for clogs. Also, make sure the battery is charged and connections are secure.
Clean the mower thoroughly, removing grass clippings and debris. Stabilize the fuel or drain the tank. Change the oil, remove the battery, and store it in a cool, dry place. Cover the mower to protect it from dust.
Turn off the mower and disconnect the spark plug. Locate the belt adjustment bolt, usually near the engine. Loosen the bolt, adjust the tension to have about 1/2 inch of play, and retighten the bolt.
Regular maintenance includes checking and changing the oil, inspecting the air filter, sharpening the blades, checking tire pressure, and cleaning the mower deck. Perform these tasks according to the schedule in the owner's manual.
