To start the Honda GX240 1990 engine, ensure the fuel valve is open, set the choke to 'closed' if the engine is cold, place the throttle control to the 'fast' position, and then pull the starter grip lightly until you feel resistance before giving a strong pull.
For the Honda GX240 engine, use SAE 10W-30 oil for general use. In colder climates, SAE 5W-30 may be used. Always check the owner's manual for specific oil recommendations.
It is recommended to change the oil after the first 20 hours of operation, and then every 100 hours or every season thereafter, whichever comes first.
The spark plug gap for the Honda GX240 engine should be set to 0.7-0.8 mm (0.028-0.031 in).
If the Honda GX240 engine won't start, check to ensure that there is fresh fuel, the fuel valve is open, the choke is set correctly, the spark plug is clean and properly gapped, and that the air filter is not clogged.
To clean the air filter, remove the air filter cover, take out the filter element, and wash it with warm soapy water. Rinse well and allow it to dry completely. Apply a small amount of engine oil to the filter before reinstalling.
Regular maintenance for the Honda GX240 includes changing the oil every 100 hours, cleaning the air filter every 50 hours, checking the spark plug every 100 hours, and inspecting and cleaning the fuel tank and filter every season.
If the engine is running rough, check for a dirty air filter, incorrect spark plug gap, stale or contaminated fuel, and ensure that the carburetor is clean. Adjusting the idle speed and throttle linkage may also help.
Honda recommends using clean, unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher. If ethanol-blended fuel is used, it should contain no more than 10% ethanol (E10) to avoid potential damage to the engine.
To winterize the Honda GX240 engine, drain the fuel from the tank and carburetor, change the oil, remove and clean the spark plug, and store the engine in a dry, cool place. Use a fuel stabilizer if needed.
