The recommended oil type for the Honda GX120 engine is SAE 10W-30 for general use. Make sure the oil is of a high-detergent, four-stroke automotive detergent oil.
The air filter should be checked every 25 hours of operation and cleaned if necessary. Replace it every 100 hours or more frequently if used in dusty conditions.
To start the Honda GX120 engine, turn the fuel valve to the "ON" position, move the choke lever to the "CLOSED" position, set the throttle to a slightly open position, pull the starter grip lightly until resistance is felt, then pull briskly. Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke to the "OPEN" position.
If the engine fails to start, check the fuel level and ensure the fuel valve is open. Verify that the spark plug is clean and properly gapped. Ensure the air filter is clean and not clogged. Also, check for any fuel contamination or stale fuel.
For long-term storage, drain the fuel tank and carburetor to prevent fuel-related issues. Change the engine oil, remove the spark plug, and pour a tablespoon of clean engine oil into the cylinder. Turn the engine several times to distribute the oil and reinstall the spark plug. Clean the engine thoroughly and store in a dry place.
To adjust the idle speed, locate the idle speed adjustment screw on the carburetor. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease it. Adjust until the engine runs smoothly at the desired idle speed.
The spark plug gap for the Honda GX120 engine should be set to 0.028-0.031 inches (0.7-0.8 mm).
To replace the fuel filter, first turn off the fuel valve and remove the fuel line from the carburetor. Remove the old fuel filter from the line and replace it with a new one, ensuring the arrow on the filter points towards the carburetor. Reattach the fuel line and turn on the fuel valve.
If there is a sudden loss of power, check if the air filter is clean and the fuel is fresh and uncontaminated. Inspect the spark plug for wear or fouling, and ensure the exhaust is not obstructed. Additionally, verify that the carburetor is clean and properly adjusted.
To change the oil, first let the engine warm up, then turn it off and remove the oil filler cap/dipstick. Place an appropriate container underneath, remove the oil drain plug, and allow the oil to drain completely. Reinstall the drain plug and fill with the recommended oil type to the proper level. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick.
