To perform an oil change, first warm up the engine, place the bike on a level surface, and turn it off. Remove the oil fill cap. Position an oil drain pan under the drain plug, remove the plug, and allow the oil to drain completely. Replace the drain plug and refill with the recommended oil type and quantity. Finally, replace the oil fill cap and check for leaks.
The recommended tire pressure is 36 PSI for the front tire and 40 PSI for the rear tire. Always check the tire pressure when the tires are cold for the most accurate reading.
If the bike won't start, check the battery for charge and ensure the terminals are clean and connected. Verify the kill switch is set to 'Run' and the kickstand is up. Examine the fuel level and ensure the fuel valve is open. If it still doesn't start, inspect the spark plugs and replace them if necessary.
Regular maintenance includes changing the oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles, checking and adjusting tire pressure, inspecting brake pads and fluid, cleaning and lubricating the drive chain, and checking all lights and signals. Also, check the battery and charging system at regular intervals.
To adjust the suspension, locate the rear shock absorbers and use a spanner wrench to adjust the preload settings. Turn the adjuster clockwise to increase preload for heavier loads or passengers, and counterclockwise to decrease it for a softer ride. Consult the owner’s manual for specific settings based on weight and riding style.
If your motorcycle is overheating, first check the coolant level and top it off if necessary. Inspect the radiator and hoses for leaks or blockages. Make sure the cooling fan is operational. Avoid prolonged idling and ensure adequate airflow over the radiator when riding. If the problem persists, consider seeking professional assistance.
To clean the leather seat, use a mild leather cleaner applied with a soft cloth. Gently scrub the surface and then wipe it with a clean, damp cloth. After it dries, apply a leather conditioner to keep the leather supple and protected from the elements. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the leather.
Harley-Davidson recommends using SAE 20W50 motorcycle oil for the Road King Classic, especially in moderate to hot climates. Ensure the oil meets or exceeds API service classifications and is formulated for use in high-performance, air-cooled V-twin engines.
To improve fuel efficiency, maintain proper tire pressure, ensure regular engine maintenance, and avoid aggressive acceleration and braking. Use high-quality fuel and keep the motorcycle at a steady speed when possible. Reducing excess weight and ensuring the bike is aerodynamically clean can also help.
To replace the brake pads, first lift the motorcycle and remove the wheel. Remove the caliper bolts and slide the caliper off the rotor. Take out the old brake pads and replace them with new ones, ensuring they are seated properly. Reinstall the caliper and wheel, and then test the brakes before riding.
