To thread the Singer SP550, raise the presser foot, turn the handwheel to raise the needle to its highest position, and follow the threading path indicated on the machine, ensuring the thread is securely seated in the tension discs.
Ensure you are using the correct needle size and type for your fabric, check for any bent or damaged needles, and verify that the needle is inserted correctly and tightened securely.
To adjust the tension, use the tension dial located on the front of the machine. Lower numbers reduce tension, while higher numbers increase it. Test on a scrap piece of fabric to find the optimal setting.
Check that the needle is properly inserted and not damaged, ensure the machine is threaded correctly, and verify the compatibility of the thread and needle with the fabric being used.
Regularly clean lint from the bobbin area and feed dogs using the brush provided, oil the machine according to the manual, and have it professionally serviced annually.
Ensure the feed dogs are raised and not set to the darning position, check that the presser foot is lowered, and verify that there is no lint obstructing the feed dogs.
Attach the buttonhole foot, select the buttonhole stitch, place the fabric under the foot, and follow the machine's prompts to complete the buttonhole.
Stop the machine immediately, check for any obstructions or tangled threads, ensure the machine is threaded correctly, and clean the bobbin area of any lint or debris.
Ensure the machine is turned off, lower the presser foot, loosen the needle clamp screw, remove the old needle, insert a new one with the flat side facing the back, and tighten the clamp screw securely.
The Singer SP550 can handle a wide range of fabrics, from lightweight materials like silk and cotton to heavier fabrics such as denim and canvas, provided the appropriate needle and thread are used.
