To thread the Singer 5500, raise the presser foot and turn off the machine. Place the spool on the spool pin and secure it with the spool cap. Pull the thread through the thread guide and follow the threading path indicated on the machine. Thread the needle from front to back.
Ensure you are using the correct needle for your fabric and that it is not bent or dull. Re-thread the machine, making sure the thread is properly seated in the tension discs. Also, check the bobbin for proper threading and tension.
Regular maintenance includes cleaning the feed dogs and bobbin area with a brush. Oil the moving parts as recommended in the user manual. Ensure to unplug the machine before cleaning and perform maintenance every few months or after intensive use.
The noise may be due to a lack of lubrication. Check if the machine is properly oiled. Also, inspect for any trapped threads or lint in the bobbin area and remove them. Ensure the needle is installed correctly and not damaged.
To adjust the tension, use the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For lighter fabrics, lower the tension, and for heavier fabrics, increase it. Make small adjustments and test on a scrap piece of fabric.
The Singer 5500 requires a Class 15 transparent bobbin. Ensure to use the correct bobbin type to avoid sewing issues.
Check if the power cord and foot pedal are securely connected. Verify that the power outlet is functioning. Inspect the machine's fuse and replace it if necessary, as outlined in the user manual.
Use the automatic buttonhole foot included with the machine. Select the buttonhole stitch on the machine, place the button in the foot, and follow the instructions to create uniform buttonholes.
Turn off the machine and raise the needle to its highest position. Loosen the needle clamp screw and remove the old needle. Insert a new needle with the flat side facing the back and tighten the clamp screw securely.
Jamming can be caused by improper threading or bobbin placement. Re-thread the machine and ensure the bobbin is correctly inserted. Clean the bobbin area of any lint or threads and check the needle for damage.
