To thread the Singer 3221, start by raising the presser foot and turning the handwheel towards you to raise the needle. Place the spool on the spool pin, draw the thread through the thread guide, and follow the threading path indicated on the machine. Make sure to pass the thread through the tension discs and thread the needle from front to back.
If the needle keeps breaking, check if the needle is bent or incorrectly inserted. Ensure you are using the correct needle size for the fabric. Verify that the needle is tightened properly and not hitting the presser foot or needle plate. Also, make sure the thread is threaded correctly and the tension is not too tight.
Regular maintenance includes dusting the machine and oiling it after every 10 hours of use. Remove the needle plate and use a small brush to clean out lint and debris. Oil the moving parts as per the manual's instructions, using only sewing machine oil. Avoid using excessive oil.
Ensure the feed dogs are raised and not covered by the darning plate. Check that the presser foot is lowered and the correct presser foot pressure is applied. If the issue persists, clean the feed dogs to remove any lint build-up that might obstruct movement.
To adjust tension, identify the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For tighter tension, increase the number setting, and for looser tension, decrease it. Test on a scrap piece of fabric to find the correct balance, ensuring even stitches on both sides of the fabric.
Raise the needle and presser foot. Press the black lever at the back of the presser foot holder to release the current foot. Align the new foot under the holder and lower the presser foot lifter to snap it into place. Ensure it is securely attached before sewing.
Check that the needle is not bent, dull, or incorrectly inserted. Ensure the needle is suitable for the fabric type. Re-thread the machine, making sure the thread follows the correct path and the tension is adjusted properly.
Ensure the bobbin is placed correctly on the winder spindle and that the thread is wrapped around the bobbin winding tension disc. The bobbin winding spindle should be pushed to the right. If the bobbin does not wind evenly, check for proper threading and adjust the thread tension.
Use the buttonhole foot and select the buttonhole stitch. Mark the buttonhole placement on the fabric. Lower the presser foot and start sewing, allowing the machine to complete the buttonhole in sequence. Adjust the stitch length for desired buttonhole size.
First, re-thread the machine, ensuring the thread passes through all guides and the tension disc. Check the bobbin for correct placement and winding. Adjust the tension dial gradually, testing on scrap fabric until the stitches appear balanced.
