To thread the Singer 117 Featherweight, first raise the presser foot to release the tension discs. Place the spool of thread on the spool pin, and draw the thread through the top thread guide. Continue threading through the tension discs, up through the take-up lever, and then down through the remaining thread guides. Finally, thread the needle from front to back.
Frequent needle breakage can be caused by incorrect needle insertion, bent needles, or the wrong type of needle for the fabric. Ensure the needle is inserted correctly and securely, and use a new needle appropriate for the material you are sewing.
Regular maintenance involves cleaning lint from the feed dogs and bobbin area, oiling the machine according to the manual, and checking for any loose screws. Use a small brush to remove lint and apply a few drops of sewing machine oil in designated areas.
Skipped stitches can result from a dull needle, incorrect threading, or improper tension settings. Replace the needle, rethread the machine, and adjust the tension as needed to resolve the issue.
To adjust the tension, use the tension dial located on the front of the machine. For most fabrics, the tension should be set between 3 and 5. Test on a scrap piece of fabric and adjust until the stitches are balanced.
A loud noise can be due to lack of oiling, a bent needle, or a thread jam. Ensure the machine is properly oiled, replace any bent needles, and check for any obstructions in the bobbin area.
Uneven stitches might be caused by incorrect threading, tension issues, or a worn-out needle. Double-check the threading path, adjust the tension, and replace the needle if necessary.
If the fabric isn't feeding, it could be due to the feed dogs being lowered or covered in lint. Ensure the feed dogs are raised and clean out any lint or debris. Also, check if the presser foot pressure is appropriate for the fabric.
To change the needle, first turn off the machine. Loosen the needle clamp screw, remove the old needle, and insert a new one with the flat side facing the back. Tighten the needle clamp screw securely.
Bobbin thread bunching can be caused by improper threading or incorrect bobbin placement. Rethread the bobbin, ensuring it is placed correctly in the bobbin case, and check the upper threading for any issues.
