To thread the Singer 1120, raise the presser foot and turn the handwheel towards you to raise the needle. Place a spool of thread on the spool pin and follow the threading path as indicated on the machine, guiding the thread through the tension dial, take-up lever, and needle eye.
First, check that the machine is threaded correctly and re-thread if necessary. Make sure the presser foot is down while sewing. Adjust the tension dial, starting with the recommended setting (usually around 4) and test on a fabric scrap, adjusting as needed.
Ensure the needle is inserted correctly, with the flat side facing the back. Replace the needle if it's bent or dull. Check that the thread is suitable for the fabric and that it's threaded correctly.
Turn off the machine and unplug it. Remove the needle plate and clean the bobbin area with a small brush. Wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth and oil the moving parts as specified in the manual.
Check that the machine is plugged in and turned on. Ensure the handwheel is not in the bobbin winding position. If these are in order, the foot pedal or machine may require servicing.
Ensure the machine is threaded correctly and that the bobbin is wound evenly. Check the needle for damage and replace if necessary. Adjust the tension settings based on fabric type and test on a fabric scrap.
Use standard sewing machine needles suitable for your fabric type. For general sewing, a size 14/90 needle is often recommended. Consult your manual for guidance on needle selection based on fabric weight.
Install the buttonhole foot and set the stitch selector to the buttonhole setting. Mark the buttonhole placement on your fabric. Lower the presser foot and sew the buttonhole in the sequence as indicated in the manual.
First, stop the machine and check for any thread jams or lint build-up. Ensure the needle is correctly installed and not bent. If the noise persists, a professional servicing might be required.
Use the stitch length dial to adjust the length, with higher numbers for longer stitches. Use the stitch width dial to adjust the width, applicable mainly for zigzag stitches. Refer to your manual for specific settings.
