To change the oil, first run the engine for a few minutes to warm it up, then turn it off. Place an oil pan under the engine, remove the oil drain plug, and allow the oil to completely drain. Replace the drain plug, and refill with the recommended oil type and quantity as specified in the manual.
Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Avoid using gasoline with ethanol content greater than 10%.
Check the battery connections to ensure they are clean and tight. Verify that the fuel tank has gas and the fuel shut-off valve is open. Inspect the spark plug for wear and replace if necessary. Make sure the parking brake is engaged and the PTO is off.
The air filter should be checked before each use and replaced at least once a season or after 25 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Replace more frequently if operating in dusty conditions.
Check the mower blades for balance and sharpness. Ensure that all mounting hardware is tight and the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. Inspect the engine mounts and replace any worn or damaged parts.
Ensure the blades are sharp and properly balanced. Adjust the mower deck to the correct height for the grass conditions. Clean any grass buildup underneath the deck and check that the deck is level.
The recommended tire pressure is typically found in the owner's manual or on the tire's sidewall. Keep the front tires at approximately 14 psi and the rear tires at 10 psi.
Check the battery terminals for corrosion and clean them with a mixture of baking soda and water if needed. Ensure the battery is securely mounted and the terminals are tight. Check the electrolyte level and fill with distilled water if necessary.
Locate the height adjustment lever, usually found on the fender or footrest area. Move the lever to the desired cutting height. Ensure the deck is level side-to-side by measuring from the blade tips to the ground and adjusting as necessary.
Check for clogs in the mower deck and remove any obstructions. Ensure the fuel tank has enough gas and the fuel filter is not clogged. Inspect the air filter and clean or replace if it's dirty. Verify that the engine oil level is adequate.
