Scag ST-18-B Technical Manual

To change the oil, first warm up the engine to ensure the oil flows easily. Turn off the engine and remove the oil cap. Place a container under the oil drain plug, remove the plug, and let the oil drain completely. Replace the drain plug and refill the engine with new oil. Finally, check the oil level with the dipstick and add more if necessary.
First, check the battery to ensure it is charged. Next, inspect the fuel level and fuel filter for any clogs. Check the spark plugs for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Ensure all safety switches are engaged. If the problem persists, consult a professional technician.
Blades should be sharpened every 20-25 hours of mowing, or whenever you notice a decrease in cutting performance. Always follow safety precautions when removing and sharpening blades.
Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher. Avoid using ethanol-blended fuels with more than 10% ethanol to prevent engine damage.
Ensure the blades are sharp and balanced. Regularly clean the underside of the mower deck to prevent grass build-up. Adjust the cutting height according to the grass type and condition. Make sure the engine is running at full throttle while mowing.
Regular maintenance should include checking the oil level, inspecting the air filter, examining the belts for wear, ensuring the tires are properly inflated, and cleaning the mower deck. Lubricate all moving parts according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Check that the tire pressure is even on all tires. Inspect the blades for sharpness and balance. Ensure the mower deck is level from side to side and front to back. Adjust as necessary.
Locate the air filter cover, typically on the side of the engine. Remove the cover and take out the old air filter. Insert a new filter, ensuring it is seated correctly. Replace the cover and secure it in place.
Ensure the engine cooling fins and air intake screens are clean and free from debris. Check the engine oil level regularly and maintain proper oil levels. Operate the tractor in optimal conditions and avoid overloading it.
Clean the tractor thoroughly, removing all grass and debris. Change the oil and air filter. Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank and run the engine for a few minutes. Disconnect the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Store the tractor in a protected area to avoid exposure to the elements.
