To set up the intonation, use an electronic tuner. Tune your guitar and compare the pitch of the 12th fret harmonic to the pitch of the 12th fret note. Adjust the saddle forward or backward until both pitches match. Repeat for each string.
For a vintage sound, use nickel-plated steel strings. Gauge preference varies, but many players opt for .010-.046 for balanced tone and playability.
Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a guitar-specific polish. Avoid household cleaners as they can damage the finish. Wipe down the guitar after each use to remove sweat and oils.
Check for dust or oxidation. Clean the switch contacts with a small amount of contact cleaner. If noise persists, consider replacing the switch.
Check the neck relief by holding down a string at the first and last frets. There should be a slight gap at the mid-point. Adjust the truss rod if necessary. Also, check your action height and adjust saddles accordingly.
Store the guitar in a hard case in a climate-controlled environment. Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity. Loosen the strings slightly if storing for an extended period.
Ensure the neck is properly set and the bridge saddles are securely fastened. Consider using a heavier gauge string or installing a bridge upgrade for increased mass.
Check the nut slots for binding and ensure the strings are properly wound on the tuning pegs. Also, inspect the bridge and saddles for any movement.
Remove the pickguard and unscrew the pickups. Carefully desolder the wiring, noting the connections. Solder the new pickups in the same configuration and reassemble.
Open the control cavity and inspect the tone pot for loose connections or damage. Resolder any loose wires or replace the pot if necessary.
