To set up the bridge, begin by adjusting the bridge height using the screws on either side. Ensure the bridge is parallel to the body. Next, set the intonation by adjusting the screws at the back of each saddle, tuning the open string and the 12th fret harmonic to the same pitch.
Use a soft, lint-free cloth and a guitar-specific cleaner to gently wipe down the guitar. Avoid household cleaning agents. For deeper cleaning, use a polish formulated for nitrocellulose finishes, applied sparingly.
To reduce hum, consider using a noise gate pedal or upgrading to noiseless single-coil pickups. Additionally, ensure the guitar's internal grounding is secure and consider shielding the pickup and control cavities with conductive paint or foil.
First, remove old strings by unwinding them from the tuning pegs. Thread new strings through the tailpiece, and pull them through the bridge. Position each string in the nut slot and wind around the tuning peg, ensuring 2-3 wraps for stability.
Locate the truss rod adjustment at the neck base or headstock. Use the appropriate Allen wrench or screwdriver to make slight adjustments: clockwise to reduce relief, or counterclockwise to increase it. Check neck relief frequently to avoid over-adjustment.
For a vintage Fender Jaguar, flatwound strings in a medium gauge (e.g., .011 to .050) are often recommended to maintain the guitar's classic tone and feel. However, string choice can vary based on personal preference and playing style.
Start by checking the pickup selector switch and volume knobs for proper function. Ensure all wiring is intact and solder joints are secure. Use a multimeter to test pickup resistance and identify faulty pickups.
The rhythm circuit, activated by the upper slide switch, offers a separate set of volume and tone controls for the neck pickup. It provides a darker, bassier sound, ideal for rhythm playing.
Ensure the nut slots are properly filed and lubricated with graphite or a nut lubricant. Check that the bridge and saddles are secure and properly adjusted. Lock the strings at the tuning pegs, and consider upgrading to locking tuners for improved stability.
Common modifications include upgrading the bridge to a Mustang or Mastery bridge for better stability, installing hotter pickups for a modern sound, and adding a buzz stop to increase string tension and sustain.
