Ensure the engine is off and cooled down. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder you want to test. Attach the appropriate adapter from the kit to the tester and then insert it into the spark plug hole. Make sure it is securely connected to avoid air leaks.
Connect the tester to the cylinder as described. Disable the ignition system to prevent the engine from starting. Crank the engine several revolutions with the throttle open and record the highest pressure reading on the gauge. Repeat for each cylinder.
Check all connections to ensure they are tight and secure. Verify that the adapter is properly seated in the spark plug hole. Examine the gauge and hoses for any signs of damage or leaks.
After each use, clean the adapters and hoses with a dry cloth. Store the components in the provided case to protect them from dirt and damage. Periodically check the gauge for accuracy and recalibrate if necessary.
Inconsistent readings can be due to worn piston rings, damaged valves, or head gasket leaks. Ensure all connections are tight and test conditions are uniform for each cylinder.
The CHT693 kit is designed for gasoline engines. For diesel engines, a specialized diesel compression tester is recommended due to higher pressure requirements.
Compare the readings to the manufacturer's specifications for your engine. All cylinders should have similar readings, typically within 10-15% of each other. Significant deviations may indicate engine problems.
It is best to perform the test when the engine is warm but not hot, as high temperatures can affect readings and pose safety risks. Let the engine cool down if it is too hot to touch.
